Rietbrand Geesbrug still keeps the fire brigade busy: ‘Probably until well into the afternoon’

The fire that broke out yesterday afternoon in a meadow on Coevorderstraatweg in Geesbrug kept the fire brigade busy all night. And the work is not yet finished.

The fire has been under control for a while, but it will take a while before the job is completely done, says a spokesperson for the Drenthe Safety Region. “The hump must be completely extinguished. We will probably be busy well into the afternoon.”

The extinguishing work focuses on a large pile of reeds measuring about 100 by 30 meters that caught fire just before 5 p.m. Several corps, including from Emmen, De Krim and Hoogeveen, were called to the seat of the fire, which was located right behind a nursery. An excavator from a neighboring company also helped.

The burning bump led to a lot of smoke development that could be seen for miles around. The fire brigade teams that arrived on site yesterday have now been relieved by colleagues who will take on the work in the coming hours.

What makes this reed fire a long-term job has to do with the intensity, among other things. “The reed burns and glows very much. There is a lot of fire right up to the heart of the hump,” explains the VRD spokesperson. “That makes it tricky.” The fire brigade has the hump pulled into pieces and then extinguishes those parts.

It is not yet clear how the fire started.
