The jury considers that Ridoan O. had to wait too long for his trial as a mitigating circumstance. Kris Vincke, lawyer for Ridoan O., clarifies this choice: “Actually, the court said that he would normally get 30 years, but because there was a violation of the reasonable period, namely that the Public Prosecution Service waited 11 months to file its for drawing up and filing an indictment, he will receive compensation for this. The court accepted this and the European Court then imposed that part of the sentence must be reduced.”
