Ricky Gervais slaps at Will Smith with sharp words

When Will Smith’s Oscar slap became the dominant theme after the Academy Awards (albeit otherwise rather unspectacular), Ricky Gervais was often used as a comparison. If Chris Rock got smacked for his “GI Jane” joke, the Brit should have been killed on the open stage as the host of the Golden Globes.

Gervais would probably laugh at such a joke with a wide grin, as he is known for his extremely sharp humor, which did not spare even the biggest celebrities on an open stage with hundreds of Hollywood stars in the audience. And what does he think about the duel between Will Smith and Chris Rock?

“You don’t hit people for a joke, no matter how bad it is,” he said in a video Q&A on Twitter. “And it wasn’t even hard.” Gervais hinted that it might be the “tamest joke” he could pull on his program.

The comedian went into more detail, though, and delved into the background to the insult that struck Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith’s wife. “Someone said they were joking about her disability,” Gervais said. “I’m fat and I’m going to be bald.” He was also disabled in several ways and became the laughing stock of other people. Now it is probably time to demand advantages from others.

Of course, shortly after the Oscar incident, Ricky Gervais was asked about the severity of Chris Rock’s joke. He said at the time: “I wouldn’t have joked about his wife’s hair. I would have made a joke about her boyfriend.”

The 60-year-old alluded to Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s open relationship. The actor recently reported in his autobiography that his wife was temporarily in a relationship with the musician August Alsina.
