Stealing at the self-checkout: it is an increasing problem in our country. The number one excuse? “I accidentally forgot to scan it!” But can you invoke this if you walk to the self-scan checkout with only four (!) articles and only scan them there one by one? Radio Veronica sidekick Rick Romijn certainly does.

Rick arrested

Rick tells that he got into trouble during his supermarket session. “I was arrested in the Albert Heijn last week,” he confesses in the morning show by Tim Kline.

Fellow sidekick Niels van Baarlen: “Oh, why? Were you speeding the cart?”

The rest: “Hahahahahahahaha.”

Scanned three

What about? Rick: “I don’t do it with such a gun, but I do scan at the self-scan checkout. And I get to that cash register, I had four products with me and nothing else, but I accidentally only scanned three. Then that girl comes to me and I was so scared. She says, ‘We know you took four products.’”

Niels: “Aren’t all those Albert Heijns completely tackled to prevent theft? They’re following you, man!”

Rick: “I say: ‘Huh?!’ I thought, how does she know? Indeed, I had four products and I had only scanned three.”

Fake customers

Rick better pay attention in the future, says newsreader Florentien van der Meulen. “They now also have fake customers, don’t they, in Albert Heijn. To see if you have any doubts at the shelf, if you look around, if you are acting suspiciously.”

Niels: “I also think that if you shop with a gun like that and you pick up a product, you’re also immediately screwed at the checkout, because then you’ve taken something off. I think that will be registered immediately.”

Tim: “But you have now been caught once paying for three products instead of four.”

No fine

Niels: “Will you get a fine?”

Rick: “No, she said, ‘Yeah, it can happen, can’t it?’ I felt so stupid.”

Tim: “It is now registered on your bonus card, so every time you put your bonus card under that thing, they know: that is Mr. Romijn, he is unreliable.”

But how did Albert Heijn know that Rick had taken four articles? “She said, ‘We know.’”

Niels: “They have cameras everywhere, man. I think they look above those cash registers in your basket.”

Rick: “It was also a woman, wasn’t it, who checked me. They know everything! Hahahahaha.”
