If there’s one thing he hates, it’s the inaccurate reporting in gossip magazines, comedian Richard Groenendijk shows in conversation with the Beau monde. It makes him angry and sad. “A while ago I suddenly got a call from a second cousin from Arnhem: ‘I didn’t know that your father passed away!’”

Dead father

Richard thought that was a really strange message. “I responded with: ‘Me neither, this morning he was still whitewashing the ceiling.’ But she was really upset by a publication of such an annoying tabloid.”

What was in that gossip magazine, which he doesn’t mention by name? He quotes: “Richard Groenendijk with his mother in the Luxor Theater. An emotional event, because she always came here to see him with his deceased father.”

‘very bad’

It makes no sense at all and they don’t understand what impact this has, Richard snorts. “A magazine like this remains at the hairdresser’s for another three years, and families across the country are terrified of typhoid fever when they read such a message. It is often the case that something is written that is not correct, but this really bothered me.”

Fortunately, he will not soon end up on the juice channels. To do that, he must at least cheat. And there aren’t even options for that, he jokes. “You sometimes hear of artists who are tempted all the time, but I am not someone who is very easy to market.”

Recipes

So the temptations are not there for the taking, Richard wants to say. “This year I have been on stage for 25 years, but I have never had one dishonest proposal. All I get are recipes, hahaha.”
