Traditionally, the ribbons are awarded every year on the day before King’s Day. This time seventeen residents of Zoetermeer received a ribbon. Nice detail: there were two couples of whom all four did not know that they would also get a ribbon themselves.

Of the Zoetermeerders who received a royal award, sixteen people were appointed as a member in the Order of Oranje-Nassau. Those are:

- Marius den Riet and his wife Janny den Riet-de Bruin

- Lodewijk van der Weerden
- Marieke Luijken-van Beekum
- Anita van Santvoord
In addition, a Zoetermeerder was appointed Knight in the Order of Oranje-Nassau. That’s:
Number of ribbons in the Netherlands
This year, more than 3,400 people throughout the Netherlands are surprised with a ribbon. The vast majority of them get one because of their volunteer work, the rest receives it because of ‘special merits in the paid job’. Of all the decorated people, 89 percent are appointed as Member of the Order of Oranje-Nassau.
Types of ribbons
What awards could you get? There are a total of around one hundred recognized awards in the Netherlands and within it there are ribbons for civilians and for uniformed people, such as soldiers.
The most famous ribbons are from the Order of Oranje-Nassau. This is intended for anyone who has worked for society in a special way. Appointments in the Order of Oranje-Nassau are subdivided into six titles and associated degrees: Ridder Grootkruis, Grand Officer, Commandeur, Officer, Knight and Member.
