3025 citizens decorated royally for special services to society

This year’s General Opportunity for awarding royal decorations (the Ribbons Rain) will take place on Tuesday 26 April. This is, as usual, the last working day before His Majesty the King’s birthday.

The mayors in the country and the lieutenant governors and governors in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom decorate or inform the 3,025 citizens who have made a special contribution to society before 1 p.m. that day. At 1:00 PM, the names of the decorated will appear in the special edition of the Government Gazette. The awards can take place throughout the day.

For the General Opportunity 2022, a total of 3,297 proposals were submitted by citizens and civil society organisations. These proposals are submitted to the municipalities. First, the mayors and then the King’s Commissioners issue an opinion on these proposals. After that, the proposal with both recommendations will be submitted to the Chapter for the Civil Orders, the advisory body of the Dutch government when it comes to awards. On the advice of the Chapter, the proposals are presented by the various ministers to His Majesty the King.

On April 26, 11 persons will be appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion and 3,014 persons will be appointed to one of the six degrees in the Order of Orange-Nassau. In the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, 58 people receive a Royal decoration.
