Pieter de Waard was awarded ‘his’ Telstar at the New Year’s reception. He was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau by IJmuiden mayor Frank Dales. Until this year, the flamboyant De Waard was general manager of the football club from the Kitchen Champion Division for 17 years.
Dales praised Pieter de Waard in his speech for everything he had meant to Telstar in his role as general manager. He was at the basis of diversity, inclusivity and accessibility at Telstar. For example, the Telstar@Work project was started in collaboration with IJmond Werkt. This prepares people who are distanced from the labor market for paid employment.
The colorful De Waard was also the founder of several socially important projects, such as Playing for Succes and School’s Cool, to help children who have fallen behind for various reasons. And Telstar Street League was set up to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods.
Flamboyant
De Waard has also meant a lot to the club itself. Through his flamboyant media appearances he put Telstar on the map several times, under his leadership the stadium was renovated and the club became financially healthy again.
De Waard said goodbye in the summer of 2023. He then worked as a waiter at Paviljoen Zeezicht in IJmuiden.
