FRANKFURT (Dow Jones) — In the midst of the Ukraine war, Germany’s largest armaments group, Rheinmetall, has announced that it will increase its workforce significantly. In Germany alone, 1,000 new jobs are to be created this year, said CEO Armin Papperger to the Handelsblatt. 700 vacancies have already been filled. According to Papperger, Rheinmetall plans to hire “several thousand people” worldwide this year.
There are currently almost 1,300 vacancies on the Rheinmetall careers page, almost twice as many as a year ago. The Dsseldorf armaments group is primarily looking for IT specialists and engineers. At the end of 2021, Rheinmetall employed almost 24,000 people worldwide. According to Papperger, Rheinmetall received 145,000 applications last year, 64,000 of them from Germany. The CEO assumes that the numbers are likely to continue to rise this year. “The applications got a boost with the war in Ukraine,” said the CEO.
