FRANKFURT (Dow Jones) — The armaments companies Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) have settled a legal dispute over statements by Rheinmetall boss Armin Papperger on copyrights to the Leopard 2 battle tank to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) with a settlement. The tank is being built by KMW, Rheinmetall is supplying equipment such as weapon systems, ammunition and fire control technology.
KMW had accused Papperger of claiming exclusive rights to the Leopard 2A4 in favor of Rheinmetall in the interview with the NZZ on March 15. Rheinmetall and Papperger saw this differently, as the DAX group announced.
The legal dispute was to be heard at the Munich I Regional Court on Tuesday at 11 a.m., but it did not come to that. “The parties have settled,” said the court. With that, the proceedings for the district court were settled.
As Rheinmetall AG further announced, the dispute revolved around the statements: “Rheinmetall owns the rights up to the Leopard 2A4” and “We built a thousand Leopard 2A4s, based on our own intellectual property”.
In coordination with KMW, the group has now made it clear: “Neither Mr. Papperger nor Rheinmetall AG wanted or want to express with the reproached statements that Rheinmetall AG has exclusive rights to the Leopard 2A4 battle tank.”
The clarification of questions about “copyright to the Leopard” or the question of whether a party has exclusive or sole rights to the Leopard 2A4 hull were not part of the proceedings.
