Revolution of Our Times by Kiwi Chow: the review by Paolo Mereghetti

R.EVOLUTION OF OUR TIMES
Genre: Militant documentary
Direction: Kiwi Chow. With the anonymous people of Hong Kong

The Chinese government’s extradition bill proposed in February 2019 (which, with a unilateral decision by Beijing, annulled the Sino-British agreements stipulated with the passage of Hong Kong to China which guaranteed respect for some democratic freedoms that did not exist in the rest of China) sparked a popular protest which grew far beyond Governor Carrie Lam’s expectations and set the former colony on fire for months.

Hong Kong director Kiwi Chow decided to document what was happening and, recovering the material shot by militants and journalists, he made a two and a half hour documentary that finally arrives in Italy despite the Chinese boycott attempts.

Street riots in Hong Kong in 2019

There are the memories of those who participated in the clashes and occupations (many with their faces covered and fake voices, many changing their names) and there are above all the footage of police violence and the use of criminals for punitive expeditions.

There are no ideological proclamations, but only desperate demands for justice and democracy (that of the old farmer “Uncle Chan” is moving) and the dream of a population that does not accept to lose its freedom. Absolutely not to be missed.

For those who do not want to forget those who fight for freedom.
