Review: Yo La Tengo :: This Stupid World

In a far away, wibbly wobbly, timey wimey time bubble, the adorable creature Yo La Tengo lives on his own planet called Hoboken. Away from generations and genres, they have been making music there for almost forty years now. Through a rift in space and time, decoratively packaged sound works of the cute little animal reach us again and again and delight fans and critics.

This is now happening for the 17th time with THIS STUPID WORLD. After enjoying the ambient with its last offering WE HAVE AMNESIA SOMETIMES, the Yo La Tengo now delights us again with those sounds that inspire us the most. The ones we know from beloved alms like FADE.

It chooses the theme of time, of all things, to keep the nine wise men together. “I see clearly how it ends / I see the moon rise as the sun descends”, it sings in the opener “Sinatra Drive Breakdown”, while energetic guitars and bass break through the barricades to earth. With “Fallout” it casually plays off its trademarks. “Miles Away” offers dream pop in the most beautiful of all its beautiful forms. The best Yo La Tengo album since the best album since the best album before it. Thanks.
