Review: Wilder Maker :: Male Models

Singer/songwriter Daniel Birnbaum recently said that he and his band mates Nick Jost and Sean Mullins are big playlist fans and that he saw this album as a challenge: please let MALE MODELS sound like a playlist. How this is supposed to work is already clear from the first three tracks: there could be three bands in the game that, hooked on a few favorite songs, slip into the different moods: “Letter Of Apology” at the start surfs on the “Rock And Roll” Welle, who set Velvet Undergound moving in 1970, soon quotes the guitar intro of The Beatles’ “Here Comes The Sun.”

And yes, it goes well together, and before and after that the band from New York play themselves free in the upscale indie rock sound (and doesn’t that remind you of the parquet courts?). “A Professional” could be straight out of a “Melancholic Keyboard Pop” playlist, and with “New Anxiety” we’re opening up the Americana folder with a seventies emphasis. The fact that all of this doesn’t fall apart and arrives as a pop-history mix is thanks to Birnbaum’s exquisite songwriting. The finale is the track “Jason”: Birnbaum’s voice in front of dark piano chords, now and then the thunder of fireworks. End of the party, but feel free to start the playlist all over again.
