For half a minute at the beginning of the album, the listener’s ears buzz around with these flutes, the musical implementation of a view over wide meadows. In any case, it sounds very reassuring, let there be peace. Then Molly Hamilton’s voice arrives in the music, later a few electric guitars are also on board. So “While You Wait” turns into a stately soft rock song after all.
The band manages the balance between getting out there with the old rock music and hiding with the instruments quite well over long stretches of their sixth album, there is strangely shimmering country rock here, which becomes slightly heeling psychedelic pop, Widowspeak constantly crossing the median between the genre lanes without endangering the flow of traffic.
Call THE JACKET an Americana album, if you like, it’s also a collection of songs based on the story of a fictional band caught somewhere between wandering egos and shared visions. Hamilton and guitarist Robert Earl Thomas, accompanied by drummer Michael Stasiak and bassist and pianist JD Sumner, navigate the highways of their imaginations with bright headlights, ending up in bars and backstage venues where the guitars are still singing softly in the morning. Oh how beautiful.
