Review: Weyes Blood :: And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow

Birds are chirping, a thunderstorm is brewing in the distance, lovely guitar chords accompany an even lovelier female voice – actually, Weyes Blood’s music should be almost sweet to caries. Actually. Because Natalie Mering aka Weyes Blood is a master of double bottoms – whether she’s singing about the chaos we humans make in the world (“Children Of The Empire”) or what’s left after the apocalypse (“The Worst”) ), about love (“A Given Thing”) and men who don’t know when to be quiet (“Grapevine”). AND IN THE DARKNESS, HEARTS AGLOW is the second chapter in a trilogy that began with the previous album TITANIC RISING and deals with the “shit show” that we as a whole are currently on.

? AND IN THE DARKNESS, HEARTS AGLOW

Loneliness and the internet, instability and stagnation, there is a lot going on. And instead of dancing around it, Weyes Blood climbs right into the shared pain: “I’ve been without friends, I’ve just been working for years and I stopped having fun,” she sings, summing up the drama of growing up. Is there a way out of the loop? Weyes Blood doesn’t know either, but takes us by the hand and goes on a quest.
