When Marco Wanda works in the studio, he also thinks about the stadium. There is no other way to explain why almost every one of the twelve tracks on his band Wanda’s new, self-titled album is so suitable for the arena. Yet again. It’s hard not to be impressed by the wall of sound that’s being built here. Guitar solos, polyphonic vocals, build-up of tension that dissolves in bombastic refrains – Wanda deliver their usual euphoric performance.
But how does their approach differ from the alpine rock of Andreas Gabalier, who also puts the powerful at the center of his music production? It is their joy in musical quotations and ultimately, of course, their political stance. Where Gabalier is at home, Wanda lyrically deliver the doubt and rebellion against the circumstances. This time they confidently trigger indie music experiences of the early 80s, quote Ton Steine Scherben and casually do without end rhymes where they make no sense.
That’s smart and hopefully keeps your music from falling into the wrong hands. Although the bro culture is again very popular on the new album, the man’s desire for “gang” is deliberately rejected in the song of the same name: “Nothing we do will ever become a legend.” What we get to hear, are rock hits that stop themselves before they make their way into the beer tent, and still encourage escapist shout-alongs at student parties.
