This already exemplifies the early childhood experience that inspired the title and cover of her seventh studio album: the loss and reattachment of the fingers of her left hand. The Irish girl still plays the guitar – just a little differently. The energy and free spirit jump out at you again and again on HANDS: in the driving political struggle number “What’s Wrong With Changing”, in the party excesses of the disco-pop track “I Lose Myself Completely” or in “FKK (No Pants Dance), a funky cheer for the liberal spirit of Bird’s adopted home of Berlin.
While the predecessor WOMAN attracted attention with its soul touch, this time Bird sounds extremely synthie- and 80ies-pop-heavy. Bird doesn’t shy away from any breaks, subtlety is not important to her, honesty and emotionality are. And when the last track “Pretty Lies” culminates in a prog rock inferno, it’s amusing in its annoyingness. Wallis Bird just does her thing.
