Review: Viagra Boys :: Cave World

It’s nice that rock bands have had to deal with the same idiots as us normal people over the past two years. One theme dominates CAVE WORLD, the third album by the Stockholm chaos group Viagra Boys: conspiracy theories and their stupid supporters. The 12 tracks are teeming with vaccinations, microchips, lizard people and fake news. And Sebastian Murphy, the post-punk band’s screaming, moaning, spitting singer, mimics all the madness perfectly. “You ain’t no ape / You’re a Troglodyte,” he yells in the song “Troglodyte,” equating the modern angry citizen with a Neanderthal.

In general, the group doesn’t skimp on Stone Age comparisons on their new record, that’s simplified, but totally okay. There’s a lot of booming and rattling on the album again, only saxophone and synthesizer bring melody to the noise that the band has branded for itself. It is particularly beautiful when Murphy uses his voice as an instrument, which he sometimes trembles, sometimes rattles, sometimes sighs. Viagra Boys are most fun when they don’t take themselves too seriously. Only then does the meta level open up, which takes aim at your entire genre in all its seriousness. It works very well again this time.
