Review: Various Artists :: Cherry Stars Collide Dream Pop, Shoegaze & Ethereal Rock 1986-1995

A few years ago, Cherry Red’s London specialists curated the STILL IN A DREAM box, which took an almost complete look at the shoegazer scene of the late 80’s and early 90’s. CHERRY STARS COLLIDE now sees itself as a supplementary set: pieces from Shoegaze partner genres such as dream’n’noise pop and post-rock can be found on four CDs, and the aesthetics of the box are not without reason reminiscent of the designs of the British 4ad label. This one had the big names under contract over in America, while the original artists of Cherry Red were rather second-rate at the time – which did not detract from the brilliance of their music.

The box now brings it all together: 4ad stars like the Cocteau Twins or Dead Can Dance, dreamy acts with mainstream connections
like The Dream Academy or the (early) Cranberries, jingle-jangle heroes like the Kitchens Of Distinction or The Ocean Blue, wave bands like The Chameleons or The Wake, the American section with the Red House Painters or Mazzy Star – each does not represent with the hits, but with early, groundbreaking tracks.

Also included is an abridged version of Talk Talk’s “Eden,” found on the divine SPIRIT OF EDEN album, or Julee Cruise’s “Falling,” off the Twin Peaks soundtrack, both tracks for which the compilation rights are reserved had to struggle to catch up, showing that Cherry Red put some effort into the project. What those who are interested in putting these songs together as a playlist from the streaming provider should know: Not all of these songs can be found there, and you also miss the short but relevant texts in the booklet. Anyone who listens and reads has the advantage of being able to make many references in this cosmos of the great indie years, which then motivate them to discover more and continue listening.
