Review: Ty Segall :: THREE BELLS

Psych rock to stay at home.

When Ty Segall sings in his new song “My Room” about how he would rather stay at home than go into the nasty outside world (“Out there, I’m too dizzy / I’d rather be inside my room”) , one would like to say to him: As long as he is composing such good music in there, he should stay at home.

On THREE BELLS, the multi-instrumentalist and psych lover manages to sound completely different than on his synth space album HARMONIZER (2021) and the songwriter-heavy HELLO, HI (2022). The interplay of weird drum rhythms, acoustic guitar and overdriven electric guitar works excellently on THREE BELLS, creating a mixture of math, glam, psych rock and folk that you’ve never heard before.

The pieces are always a little different from conventional rock compositions and take unexpected paths. In addition, Segall layers sound tracks on top of each other that at first seem hardly compatible – for example fuzz sound and acoustic guitar sounds (“I Hear”). That sounds weird, scrappy, sometimes even beautiful. So stay home, Ty!
