Review: The White Stripes :: Elephant (20th Anniversary Limited Edition)

WHITE BLOOD CELLS caused sweats in the indie discos in 2001, two years later Meg and Jack White trampled the collective perception on their elephant. The Simpsons picked up Michel Gondry’s video for “The Hardest Button To Button”, “Seven Nation Army” became the “Smoke On The Water” of the ’00s, the album has sold more than four million copies to date.

Not only with this cultural influence did the duo distinguish themselves from their environment of the then so-called “The Bands”, a seven-minute blues inferno like “Ball And Biscuit” would not have been expected from the Kaiser Chiefs or Hot Hot Heat.

Recorded in London over a period of just two weeks in the prolific ’60s, and on equipment most recently dating from 1963, The White Stripes have become pioneers of our retro century.

The animal namesake was chosen because of its elephantine memories for deceased relatives. Absolutely appropriate for a band that pulled the blues and the bacharach (the cover of which “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself” goes back to an idea of Meg White) from the swamp of oblivion.

The re-release will be available in duplicate: a digital deluxe edition with a powerful 27-song recording of the band’s July 2, 2003 concert at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom, and a double LP in the colors “Red Smoke”. and Clear with Red and Black Smoke.
