Review: Steffi :: The Red Hunter

Virginia and Steffi are so well known as DJs – one also as a singer and the other as a producer – that simply naming their first names is actually enough in clubs around the world. The Berghain floors may be their spiritual home base, but the two now live in Portugal. There they opened a studio with an attached label, which will now be inaugurated with Steffi’s fourth solo album THE RED HUNTER.

Virginia is not on board as a singer and the tone is a lot darker than on the collaboration LP WORK A CHANGE released in 2019. Understandable, Steffi processes the death of her own mother. The rough corner coordinates are still electro and techno grooves, but complex rhythm structures and multi-layered textures also dominate the sound.

A touch of sadness blows through the powerful kicks of this album as a spherically fragile sound, but there is nothing melancholically caught about it. On the contrary: This is forward-looking, complex and dense music from the fringes of the dance floor.
