It is well known that glitz and kitsch, pathos and embarrassment go hand in hand with stars from Montreal, and are even mutually dependent. It’s the same with the new album, even a few tracks thicker than before. Because FROM CAPELTON HILL is about the really big things in life, or about its finiteness.

Inspired and depressed by the lockdown, the initially melancholic, then hymn-like title track was created, followed by the against-all-odds-optimistic “Hoping”, which shows the true superpower of the stars: they manage to make it feel like the first one Times. So listening to music. The “Build A Fire” grooving in the direction of the dance floor with a crisp funk guitar and the single “Pretenders” have the same effect, also or precisely because stars indulge deep in 80s nostalgia here.
Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan sing themselves into frenzy of euphoria, Campbell’s voice vibrating dramatically and rhyming “miss me” with “kiss me”: This is over the top, over the top, glorious. It hurts a little that the ballads sung by Millan alone (“Patterns”, “That Girl”) turned out to be soapy and sentimental. But like I said, it’s about everything, and maybe it’s all over soon. If you find that embarrassing, you have to listen to Minimal House.
