Review: Shout Out Louds :: House

The wish comes from a kind of dark room: Oh Sara, couldn’t you take me with you on white horses, let’s run away from all our losses, as far away as possible. In the video for the song “As Far Away As Possible”, the Shout Out Louds attempt a run-away, accompanied by choirs and guitars, and yet they remain locked in the dark. The basic tone of the new album by the indie rock band from Sweden is set, it stays with HOUSE over the course of eight songs and thus meets a widespread emotional state that is so closely linked to being trapped in lockdown.

The new pieces were created in the rehearsal room in the basement in Stockholm, where it’s “warm, safe and sound”, where you drink the night away with friends. Björn Ittling from Peter, Björn & John has transferred this sound into a studio recording that has retained much of the intimacy of the first moment, but also lacks some of the power that Shout Out Louds were able to develop in the first few years.

There are moments when HOUSE sounds like a distant echo of early New Order, strangely slowed down too. Elsewhere it’s reminiscent of bands Peter, Björn and John had in mind when they first recorded: Stone Roses, Ride. The escape movement does suggest a goal: It is the time when the guitar and indie rock could still write heroic stories.
