Review: Sheer Mag :: PLAYING FAVORITES

Rock favorite songs that make you forget the world outside.

Can you sing about the good old days without seeming ridiculous or unbelievable? Tina Halladay, the resilient and charismatic singer of the US combo Sheer Mag, sings in the title song of PLAYING FAVOURITES about the good (old) feeling of being on tour with her band again: “So we packed up the van / Just like that old days / Playing the same old songs (…) / And we’re back on the road.” The song is bursting with energy, not least thanks to Halladay’s snotty, lively vocal timbre, which sets the tone for the entire album.

Since its founding in 2014, the quartet from Philadelphia has been equally influenced by (post-)punk, classic rock and garage punk, and has settled somewhere between Joan Jett, Thin Lizzy and the Sonics. Disco and funk are not entirely far away on PLAYING FAVOURITES, but first and foremost the album shows how exhilarating a truly performed rock song can still be in 2024.
