Review: Sasami :: Squeeze

What happened here? Sasami Ashworth, formerly of the band Cherry Glazerr, fused shoegaze, psych-pop and slowcore on her delightful 2019 solo debut. Now the American with Korean roots is bringing out the heavier artillery, inspired, among other things, by the Japanese legend of a goddess with a woman’s head and a snake’s body, called Nure-onna. Ashworth pours his kickass attitude into brute nu-metal tracks on SQUEEZE, driven by Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren.

At the same time, she remains true to Nure-onna’s hybrid form: Ashworth not only resembles an Aimee Mann vocally, she also ties in with her folk-pop sound, also hints at fuzzy indie rock and reflects on her classical training with dramatic strings.

Sounds disparate? It is. Especially when the elements within a song collide like in “Say It,” which sounds like a Rammstein and Sheryl Crow mashup. Nothing against experiments and variety! But for the sake of listening flow, perhaps Ashworth should have given SQUEEZE an A-side and a B-side: one for their heavier cravings, the other for their scruffy dreamy songwriting indie – both entertaining enough on their own.
