Review: Royksopp :: Profound Mysteries

An electro duo who have enjoyed working with Robyn (and she with them) on a number of occasions but simply “don’t have time” to accommodate Britney Spears’ remix request is in the running. Anyone who thought Röyksopp was Sweden, like Robyn (because that’s where “everyone” comes from), is wrong: Röyksopp are fellow countrymen from a-ha, aka: Norwegians. Aha.

Actually they didn’t want to release another album after their record with the programmatic title THE INEVITABLE END (2014), but now it’s here: PROFOUND MYSTERIES. How mysterious. And they come with their patented sound signature, Air’s airy balloon air, the Italo-warm-melodic of Giorgio Moroder, peppered with sometimes edgy powerhouse edges.

The truth is that instrumental Röyksopp were never really first violin

But it’s also true that Röyksopp were never quite the first violin instrumental and always needed strong guest vocalists to really shine, and that’s the case this time too. Fortunately, there are always great singers who like to build on Röyksopp’s house foundations.

A real highlight of the record is ergo the synth-paced melancolia disco anthem “Impossible” with the great excess soprano Alison Goldfrapp. gold medal for it! You also want to wave sparklers with the synth ballad “If You Want Me” with Susanne Sunndfør (although the melody is very simple, but the arrangement is exuberantly tear-jerking). Overall, despite many fillers, a solid thing.
