On PROFOUND MYSTERIES II, Röyksopp do “an esoteric preventive measure against those artists and genres (…) that have shaped us over the years”. And that’s many years: Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland released their first album in 1995, and a lot has happened at the interface between electronic music and pop since then. You can hear that on the album, which like its predecessor from this year comes up with various feature guests.

The performances by Karen Harding, Astrid S and Jamie Irrepressible follow the formula that big-calibre dance and pop acts, who are mainly active as producers, like to practice: bring in vocalists who use them to create their own beats in the tasteful middle can dock. That’s how Jean-Michel Jarre used to do it, that’s how Disclosure did it not so long ago and that’s how the Norwegians from Röyksopp do it too.
But they act variably and don’t pull the nastiest EDM whip out of the closet. “Unity” with Karen Harding mixes powerful breakbeats with rave piano and is reminiscent of the Northern Irish duo Bicep, “Sorry” with Jamie Irrepressible comes as a ballad, puts cotton balls under the delicate vocals and thus defines the emotional range of the LP.
