Some press statements sound like a threat. “We’ve definitely grown,” Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago is quoted as saying in a lyric for the band’s new album, DOGGEREL. That’s not good news for hardcore fans of the early pixies. After all, the best thing about the band from Boston has always been that they sounded as small and mean as their name would suggest – and as those who could relate to their manic sound often felt in the world of winners.
Frank Black and band were the Tasmanian devils of rock ‘n’ roll’s golden gods, but they could blow themselves up to forces of nature before Kim Deal’s cake-smooth vocals, Santiago’s strums and Black’s insane screams crept into the bones. In the late phase of their career, they manage their myth, which was born in the late 80s, sometimes unimaginatively, sometimes – as in the case of DOGGEREL – quite neatly.
Songs like “Haunted House” might have taken half as long and sounded mangy in the past. But the hybrid of bewitched college rock and Americana is still fun, although Black doesn’t sound quite as tattered as it used to, but actually: like good, old, passable rock. Luckily the pixies still don’t sound really big, but they only sound really great at moments.
