Review: Patrick Holland :: You’re The Boss

Patrick Holland already had a sense of maximum relaxation as Project Pablo – he dropped that alias because he didn’t want to alienate the Latinx community. Albums like I WANT TO BELIEVE or COME TO CANADA YOU WILL LIKE IT were picturesque, Slowhouse decelerators for the summer.

But electronics, dance floors, clubs and DJing are no longer among the priorities of the Canadian, who is now producing under real names. Holland has found his temporary fortune in a mix of pop, funk and indie songwriting. That sounds fine throughout, but over the full playing time the corners and edges are missing to land the really big hit.

The two saxophone-soaked numbers “The Shame Of It All” and “Sink To Dusk” are strong because they convincingly transport Holland’s Canadian laissez-faire attitude. The exchange of synthesizer for astonishingly convincing and whispering vocals and guitar doesn’t overwhelm, but rather lulls you slowly.
