“Can you remember? / When we were younger / And had no worries at all” – it’s a bit strange to hear a 17-year-old sing lines that you would attribute to clearly older people. The Austrian musician and actor Oskar Haag, however, belongs to the generation cheated of their youth by Corona, and may really think back to his childhood in the 2010s with nostalgia.

After all, the son of Naked Lunch singer and guitarist Oliver Welter is lucky enough to be able to channel his frustration into music. In the strongest moments of his debut album TEENAGE LULLABIES, Haag is reminiscent of Patrick Wolf or Konstantin Gropper/Get Well Soon: songs like “Black Dress”, from which the lyrics quoted above come, or “Leaving For Monaco Or Wherever The Fuck We Want To Go” sound like as cocky as it is tender, overflowing with electronics and classical instruments, anthemic and yet grounded.
“In Your Eyes” is a fascinating revival of freak-folk á la Psapp with its off-kilter music box melody, as well as the genuinely fake teenage lullabies “Love Me For Tonight” and “Stargazing”, in which Haag languishes like a teenage boy wearing hamstrings Fifties, he succeeds wonderfully – maybe his affinity for the theater suits him well, slipping into different roles is also musically exactly his thing. Next time he could leave out the tender indie ballads, in which not much happens apart from plucked strings and breathy vocals – There is really enough of that already. And Haag seems more made for the big appearance.
