Review: Oska :: My World, My Love, Paris

Oska always sounds a little surprised. As if she had just stepped out of the house for the first time, perhaps into the fresh morning dew, and was now seeing it all for the first time; the flowers, the animals, and last but not least, love. This is first and foremost due to this voice, which begs and jumps at the same time, which is expressive but never sees this expressiveness as an end in itself. Their debut album MY WORLD, MY LOVE, PARIS now follows the two handful of tracks that have been released over the past two years and which caused excited hooves from critics outside of Austria as well.

It underscores their core competencies, but also opens a few new doors. Core competencies, because Oska’s strength is still the popular pop ballad, settled between Laurel Canyon and film credits, we hear them here several times, the most beautiful next to the already well-known “Woodstock” is perhaps “Misunderstood” with its sighing strings and its protection against analysis of kitchen psychology.

Elsewhere, however, Oska picks up the pace, mixing beats and her songs in songs like “Starstruck” or “Mona Lisa, A Girls Best Friend”. The best is Oska, whose real name is Maria Burger, but whenever you no longer have such thoughts, when the melody and wit take over, for example in “ABC”, a small story about three letters that are combined into one grand finale, a bit like the record that saves its biggest trump cards for the end. Touching.
