Review: Nina Chuba :: Glass

Hits still have great power. In times when the classic album has basically had its day, they suddenly pop up and, when things are going well, catapult irresistible songs to the top of the charts. That’s exactly what happened to Nina Chuba last year with “Wildberry Lillet” (luckily knocking out “Layla” from number one on the singles chart), and that success has seen her sell out shows and appear at major festivals at breakneck speed.

The 24-year-old from Hamburg has already done a lot, has appeared in series as a child actress and now has 500,000 followers on Tiktok. She is an adjuster, songwriter and interpreter all in one and oozes self-confidence. It’s joyful to watch Nina Chuba rise because her music is fun. Her Dancehall/R’n’B mix is nothing special, but combined with her snotty, slightly raspy voice, this mix gets you.

The whole thing reminds you of the early Seeed, the lyrics are in German and that’s not bad at all. With a light hand, she messes up the topics that surround and concern her, without wanting to accommodate humor-free messages. Only occasionally does love sorrow break out (“Glass”), but never without Chuba seeming to lose the sovereignty of interpreting her feelings. GLAS is music for the boombox, you can literally see excited 16-year-olds sitting at the village bus stop and rapping along. You have to be able to do that first.
