Review: Neil Young & Crazy Horse :: World Record

Thesis: Rick Rubin can do one thing above all, as a producer he distills an artist to its essence. If this thesis is correct, then WORLD RECORD should have the most fundamental Neil Young of all time. What you can say: You can definitely hear the most concentrated Young for a while.

The eleven songs are all composed and stringently arranged, although this 42nd studio album by the late seventies, who is becoming more and more jolly with age, was recorded live – like all Young’s albums with Crazy Horse – but not in their own barn like on BARN recently, but in Rubin’s studio in Los Angeles. But here – apart from the 15-minute, but pretty great “Chevrolet” reminiscent of “Cortez The Killer” – hardly anything frays, the songs quickly get to the point and only rarely lose themselves in improvisations, regardless of whether they are typical crazy Horse rumble rock, HARVEST-ready country ballad or a cozy folk waltz with harmonica inserts.

The concept is also consistent: once again, Young devotes himself to the favorite theme of his late work and tries to compete with Greta Thunberg: “Love Earth”, “This Old Planet (Changing Days)” or “The World (Is In Trouble Now)” are already revealed in the title, what drives Young. “No more war, only love,” sings the male choir hopefully in “Walking On The Road (To The Future)”. The fact that he – regardless of whether he composes slogans, thinks himself into a bird or looks at newspaper front pages – approaches the most pressing questions of mankind with a rather naïve view is also part of the essence of Neil Young.
