Mura Masa is the guy with the extra long guest list. On RYC (2020), the British producer has already hosted pop celebrities such as Tirzah, Slowthai and Wolf Alice. DEMON TIME is now mostly featuring songs again, with Pa Salieu and Skillibeng (“Blessing Time”) as well as Lil Uzi Vert, PinkPantheress and Shygirl (“Bbycakes”) again featuring celebrities.
What is striking in comparison to the predecessor: The guitar part and indie factor has decreased (with the exception of “2gether”), the eleven tracks are more on the dance floor. Influences range from Latino pop to hyperpop to acts like the late Scottish producer Sophie.
Outstanding is the homage to Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl”, which Mura Masa (ft. Shygirl/Channel Tres) turns into “Holaback Bitch” and is musically an exciting fusion of house, jazz and rap. That being said, there are also many songs that feel over-produced and where the compositions are unexciting or unusual.
