Review: Mudhoney :: Plastic Eternity

If anyone has been marginalized by pop history, it’s Mudhoney. They were the band that would become Nirvana before Nirvana became Nirvana. So Mudhoney frontman Mark Arm didn’t end up on the covers of teen magazines, but only as a warehouse clerk in the basement of grunge label Sub Pop. But he’s still alive and plays creaking rock with his band, which has now existed for 35 years, on their eleventh album, which is characterized above all by persistence.

The guitar riffs are loud, the bass growls viciously, the drums hit the twelve nicely, and Arm sings savagely like Iggy Pop, another great survivor. He advocates flushing the fascists down the toilet and stopping climate change: that should be the consensus today, but the music was at best the day before yesterday. But if you survive that long, you can afford all sorts of things – even if not necessarily such an ugly cover.
