Review: Mona Mur :: The Original Band (1984-86)

Sometimes, in retrospect, I’m very thankful for the female role models who shook things up in the punk and wave scene from the early eighties. Strong, cool women like Bettina Köster and Gudrun Gut (Malaria), Anja Huwe (X times Germany) or Sabine Bredy alias Mona Mur shaped a new image of femininity with androgynous looks, dark voices and an aura of aloofness.

It is all the more surprising to what extent the squeaky, eye-clinging and soft dominates social media and charts again today. Definitely a step backwards. In any case, the music of these artists is still relevant because it resisted any market adjustment and even attracted international attention due to its uniqueness. Someone like Nena just grabbed what courage and cheek was crumbled from the table at the time and boiled it down to fragrant pop.

Greetings from Nick Cave

Now, an early studio recording by artist Mona Mur with legendary producer Raymond “Nainz” Watts is being released for the first time. She was accompanied until 1986 by her band Diemieter, in which Alex Hacke and FM Unit from Einsturzenden Neubauten played, among others. In addition to her own pieces, she performs some Brecht/Weill classics (including “Surabaya Johnny”) with intensity and a dark timbre. Musically, the whole thing is based on the sound of the “Berlin disease”, Nick Cave says hello.

Bredy has been working as a solo artist since 1986, has released several albums and has made a career as a taekwondo athlete on the side. That fits, because their way of oscillating between punk and chanson-like has something combative and concentrated about it. It is worth rediscovering this music.
