Review: Moderate :: More D4ta

Heavy crockery in “Fast Land”: The first track on the new Moderat album is an electro drum and bass bolide that doesn’t really live up to its name and treads on the spot because of its sheer weight. More of a soundtrack for a flashing apocalypse in film, a demonstration of the power of nature through the circuitry of electronics.

For two years there was radio silence between Apparat (Sascha Ring) and Modeselektor (Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary). And six years after the last joint album appearance as Moderat with III, the number 4 now follows. Time groans in these pounding soundscapes, which open up space for emotional deep exploration. Sascha Ring’s voice seems made for this, circling the weighty material in all its fragility.

Sometimes it also turns into a party track (“Easy Prey”), but we mean a party deep down in the bunker – and outside the working day has already begun. “Drum Glow” then moves the beat up again, with background noise from the jungle of our imagination, and in the end the stream of sound moves on as if there were no end at all. This music can be felt physically, it is connected to our synapses and our muscles as a film that has become sound. It is already in us.
