MØ actually has something for everyone on their new album: If Adele is too kitschy or too crass, the piano ballad “Goosebumps” might appeal, songs like “Youth Is Lost” or “New Moon” would be something for FKA twigs fans, and the concluding “Punches” with its chamber pop, electronica and Americana borrowings offers so many points of contact that it could bring joy to many listeners.
On her third full album, the Dane is able to win a majority because of the usually thick dance floor sound, and on the other hand she sings about things that affect everyone: fear and doubt, love and closeness, courage and self-empowerment. A crisis with panic attacks that MØ (real name Marie Ørsted) had two years ago finally led to the album title: MOTORDROME refers to stunt motorcyclists who drive in circles on steep walls at the fair. It has to be said that the album doesn’t sound that daring. Rather, MØ relies on what she can: deliver hit-ready, perfectly produced songs.
