Review: Mannequin Pussy :: I GOT HEAVEN

Clubbing and Kosen: The indie punks explore the extremes.

Constantly shooting is tiring. And you’re not getting any younger. Not even Mannequin Pussy. The band from Philadelphia, who already equalized their crazy noise-punk short thunderstorms on the 2019 album PATIENCE and gave it a decadent 26 minutes, continues their explorations of melody and nuance on I GOT HEAVEN.

In “Loud Bark,” singer Marisa Dabice bathes in dreamy warpaint atmosphere before rocking up into scream mode. In “Nothing Like” or “I Don’t Know You” her voice shines astonishingly sweetly through shoegaze/dream pop haze. On the other hand, at the other end of the scale, there is extra hardcore bludgeoning, shout Dabice and bassist Colins Regisford in “OK! OK! OK! OK!” and “Of Her” compete.

Mannequin Pussy are particularly effective when, like in the church-critical title track, they hit the “sweet spot” between anger and a sense of melody. “I am spiteful like a god / Seek a vengeance like the rest / For what they did to you / I will never lay to rest,” Dabice whines. No blind frenzy, no caress. Just a fucking announcement.
