Tired of the hubbub created by Pharrell Williams, her debut HEARD IT IN A PAST LIFE and a Grammy nomination, Maggie Rogers pulled out. Facing the Atlantic Ocean in Maine, she found new calm and strength. In this environment, the singer/songwriter shook off the bombast of the predecessor.
She and Kid Harpoon were the sole producers of SURRENDER. The problem: all too often, excess is replaced by arbitrariness, albeit in the most beautiful form. The picturesque “Overdrive” starts moving between indie and radio pop. As the song progresses, however, SURRENDER always falls into the same pattern. Where once Meredith Brooks or the late Alanis Morissette operated.
Except for the annoying “Shatter”, the long player doesn’t contain a bad song, but still falls short of its potential. This is shown by the Joni Mitchell-like “I’ve Got A Friend” and the short outburst “Different Kind Of World”. Two tracks, bared to the core, illustrate what a beautiful album Rogers has so far kept from us.
