Review: M83 :: Fantasy

It takes a lot of courage to continue to dabble in the large-scale indie-rock and dream-pop column fronted by Anthony Gonzalez and M83. The times when commercial breaks on VIVA were heralded with The Naked and Famous are long gone, as is the broadcaster itself. “Midnight City” remains M83’s biggest hit to this day, seeming to hover over the French band like the sword of Damocles and blasting freshman parties everywhere in the early 1900s.

“Gonzalez’s works have always been aimed at dreamers,” says the press release. That may be true, but these dreamers have long since grown up and sit in open-plan offices where the approaching lunch break means more than synths that talk about the big wide world, echoing guitars and wagon castle ballads like “Us And The Rest”. Indie isn’t youth culture anymore, so M83 have to put up with that as well, who aim FANTASY at an audience that doesn’t have one anymore.
