For three albums it was hinted at more and more. With BRAVE NEW WOMAN, Leslie Clio finally swims free. With House Of Clio she founded her own label, took over the entire production and relies on an all-female core team. Very well. The fact that she wrote all the songs herself except for the camouflage cover “Love Is A Shield” is almost a side note. The only thing that spoils the mood is that the reverse Star Trek scheme creeps in with their fourth work. Any odd album: top. Each straight, however, does not want to ignite quite so.

While PURPLE still showed the singer’s dark side, BRAVE NEW WOMAN lets the sun shine again. Clio is clearly reducing the use of electronics again. Opening with “Girl With A Gun” is a self-assured hymn to one’s strengths, a reminder to always be aware of them and a desire to share that realization along the way.
The more Clio pulls back the arrangement like in the melancholically sweet “Comment Allez-Vous?”, the better BRAVE NEW WOMAN works. But too many songs like the whistling “Good Trouble” only scratch the surface. On the other hand, after two years of pandemic, we sure can use some more sunshine and positivity.
