Review: Junk Line :: The universe is not binary

The anniversary is celebrated with a slightly softer Riot-Grrrl attitude. On DAS UNIVERSUM IS NOT BINÄR, singer Saskia Lavaux still uninhibitedly hates the patriarchy, but is also happy about overcoming it: “We were only caught in the perception of these people and we crossed borders.” Add to this emotional riffs and percussions, wonderfully vulgar and also a little cheesy.

The other side gets off even worse in “male fantasies” or “boomer tears”, but the nerves are already very thin: “The planet belongs to them, because they paid for it, and now they want free travel / And because their children are different live, baby boomer tears will flow tonight.” The whole thing seems a bit pubescent, thoroughly political anyway.

After all, it is about identity politics, not only because it is also an extremely personal work in which Lavaux reports on her own experiences with gender and queerness. The non-binary universe can hardly be assigned to just one genre, just like the entire history of the band, which has been living in Hamburg for a long time. It’s pop, it’s punk, it’s diverse. Actually fits.
