Sweet Schluffigkeit: On his fifth solo work, the Dinosaur Jr mastermind once again puts slacker rock in the limelight.
This is how it starts: “Everybody made a fuss,” sings J Mascis, a bit tearfully, quite melancholically in the opening “Can’t Believe We’re Here,” and: “if it’s all gone wrong I don’t want to be there. “ Translation: If everyone gets so upset when things go south, I’d rather not be there. With WHAT DO WE DO NOW, his fifth solo album, the Dinosaur Jr mastermind is, let’s be honest, just putting the old slacker thing in the spotlight again in all its great sloppiness: the songs are called “You Don’t Understand Me”. , “Set Me Down” or “I Can’t Find You”, you take a “ride” to see what you find.
But what can you say: You enjoy listening to Mascis hanging around and leaning, being bored and uninvolved, looking for nothing and finding nothing, because the melodies are so great, because the guitars – as is usual on his solo works, which are more acoustic – never rock like hell, even in solos . because the mood is almost peaceful. The fact that with every song you think: I know that one, I’ve already heard it from Mascis, that’s a quality feature here.
