Review: Interpol :: The Other Side Of Make Believe

The problem with previous Interpol records wasn’t the absence of light (that never had any place in this music), but the band’s attempt to create warmth even without light. Which automatically led to a clammy, musty sound, as inviting as wine-tasting in the laundry room. The band recognized the problem and took advantage of the opportunity presented by the pandemic. For the first time, the songs were not created together and under the influence of full volume, instead singer and bassist Paul Banks found his words and melodies for Daniel Kessler’s guitar motifs in isolation, which also means: maximum relaxation.

Because Banks had previously had great experiences with a self-contained vocal style on the sun-drenched indie rock songs of the very good side project Buzz, he also used it on THE OTHER SIDE OF MAKE BELIEVE. Lo and behold: Interpol are interesting again. Not so much for new listeners (they still reach for the debut TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS), but fans of the band really enjoy intricate beauties like “Passenger”, “Renegade Hearts” or “Go Easy (Palermo)”, where Interpol the move from the laundry room to the salon succeeds.
