Horse girls have a bad reputation: they are said to be rich and spoiled. Even if so much blanket scolding for animal lovers is of course mean, Nora Cheng, Penélope Lowenstein and Gigi Reece warn everyone who expects too much beautiful sound from a band called Horsegirl. “Anti-Glory” is one of the best songs on the Chicago trio’s debut, and it really does what it says on the tin. Horsegirl sing and play as if they’re doing it with ebbing strength and weird dreams in their heads that carry them through a peakless day.

Yes, the sky is gray on VERSIONS OF MODERN PERFORMANCE, but beauty can also be found between rumpled sheets. The guitars are tuned in a strange way like Slowdive or My Bloody Valentine, in the background an impenetrable whoosh and drone. And then suddenly there are tracks like “Beautiful Song”, in which the sweet “Ba-ba-baaaas” of the three of them sound like a delicate silver lining.

From overseas, Horsegirl attempt a re-examination of 80s and 90s English underground history, sounding at times like Broadcast as a grunge band, at times like The Raincoats with more discipline (and less urge to move) – but always just the right kind of glamorously weary glory.
