Review: Gorillaz :: Cracker Island

Anyone who thought in the early 2000s that the Gorillaz were a short-lived cartoon fun project that Damon Albarn used to kill Britpop boredom was wrong. Since 2017 things have even picked up speed again, CRACKER ISLAND is the fourth album in these six years. Even the visual gag with the artificial figures designed by James Hewlett has gained momentum thanks to new animation techniques. The clip for the single “Cracker Island”, staged by hip animation filmmaker Fx Goby, sets new standards.

But the project would also work without this level: Gorillaz are basically a foil on which Albarn and guests realize his vision of Electro-Pop between party and melancholy. The title song serves the celebration dimension with Thundercat on the bass, Albarn switches on his melancholic mood with “Oil”, he is joined by one of the greatest voices in rock history with Stevie Nicks – CRACKER ISLAND can’t get any better after that.

But not much weaker either: “The Tired Influencer” picks up the mood of Albarn’s solo record EVERYDAY ROBOTS, superstar Bad Bunny – just confirmed as Coachella headliner – confidently brings the Latin pop of “Tormento” home for the grand finale in minor Albarn then brings Beck to the side: The meeting of the 90s alternative superstars is a touching moment to sad piano playing and mariachi trumpets.
