Review: Ghost Car :: Truly Trash

One of the worse habits of the music press and fans is the reflex to be hasty in attributing a ’90s riot-grrrl-rock-influenced sound to all female-lined bands who torture guitars and are angry at anything. In many cases there is little to it – in the case of Ghost Car, who hail from Valencia and are now based in London, even more so.

Which is mainly due to Maria Paton, singer of the all-girl punk band. Paton has the sour-sweet, over-excited high-tension lamentation of Kathleen Hannah, who wrote feminist music history first with Bikini Kill and finally with Le Tigre, in a better mood than only Kathleen Hanna.

The songs on TRULY TRASH have more production-related power than most of the deliberately amateurish sound documents from the times of the riot grrrl movement, Ghost Car also like to leave the Schrammelpfad and lead their guitar music astray. Then the whole thing doesn’t sound like early nineties rage at all, but sometimes like net shirt glam, sometimes like garage psych rock, sometimes like girl group sound in post-punk guise. But in any case: fantastically beastly and fun.
