Review: Fantastic Negrito :: White Jesus Black Problems

Every album by Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz is a big, fat gift of fate – and medicine. The 54-year-old Californian almost died in a car accident in 1999. He later described it as a “relief” that he also lost his record deal in the wake of this tragedy. After all, hardly anyone was interested in his Prince-ish album X FACTOR in the 90s. Dphrepaulezz probably had to admit to himself that he’s equal parts radio master and fan of dirty, fuzzy rock’n’roll in order to find his later career blossoming under the name Fantastic Negrito.

His fifth post-rebirth album, WHITE JESUS BLACK PROBLEMS, is a massive multimedia project about a white maid who falls in love with a black slave in 18th-century America. The greatest cinema is already the opener: “Venomous Dogma” changes from an enraptured soul piece to a blues monster, under whose spell we poor sinners want to crawl to our backs – before the devil himself seems to drive into Fantastic Negrito. Lord, have mercy!

Even if Dphrepaulezz knows his effects box inventory extremely well, even if you are sometimes overwhelmed by so much force, you have to say: Hardly anyone currently sounds as earthy and at the same time cosmic, no one “griiiiiiieved” as wonderful as Fantastic Negrito. And no, neither does Jack White.
